Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then located many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests show the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
A senior political figure said the incident made him speechless and required to be solved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
